From the moment we see a sign, we absorb the information shown; consciously, and sometimes subconsciously. Ability to define the message that is put forth by the image, can only occur with a foundation of basic knowledge. Discerning key concepts of imagery, allows for a deeper understanding of its directive.

Signs have the ability to warn, to inform, to restrict, and to entice. They use many techniques to convey their intended purpose including color and font, as well as icons and wording. Signs can be universally understood through their use of the aforementioned concepts and techniques.

Most companies cultivate their logos with hopes of becoming recognizable, even household names. In the case of massive corporations like McDonald's, Wal-Mart, and Walt Disney, the aim is to not only be memorable, but also to come off as family-friendly and reliable.

Communication through signs and any other graphics depend solely on the brain's tendency to perceive the world through the person's past experiences. By exploiting this process, media is able to create unique connection between their message and the audiences; however, when the relationship is stretched beyond a certain point it looses its ability to properly convey its message.

The invention of road signs illustrate the visual power of communication and while much of our interpretation rest upon our perspective, the universal meaning of this type signage has evolved into a symbolic language. During the stage of inception, meaning will take on a primitive form. Then what was once unknown will become another conclusion part of the pool we draw from to act.
